Space Age

2023

Medium: Five 5"x8" Intaglio Prints

Inspired by the mid-century modern design style, “Space Age” captures a scene in a living room, looking out into a night sky filled with a large-scale moon and ringed planet. Details include popular furniture of the time, like the Eames chair, and pendant lights. The choice came from the medium of copper, as architects of the day like Frank Lloyd Wright experimented with uncommon materials to push the limits of what was possible. The illustration style takes inspiration from intaglio artist Joe Carr, and his print series “Rockets.” Carr captures similar atomic era content in a space age style. The color palette for my series comes from the idea of space, violet hues are often associated with space age exploration. Unique shades of teal and green relate to the unknown element of space travel, and were growing in popularity in the late 60s. À la poupée was chosen for its blending qualities which match the intended appearance, and chine collé for its collage and mixed-material character.
